Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear friends,

We have a fun and busy weekend ahead so I'm excited to get it started! With a few visitors, a birthday party and a rented movie in the plans, I know it's going to be a great one.

I recently read an incredible post on Oh Joy! title The Art of Being a Goal-Getter and it's left me feeling completely inspired. It's about setting goals and achieving your dreams. I remember being in college and feeling so excited and driven to take on the world once I graduated but after a couple of jobs that didn't work out as planned and having a baby, I somehow lost that enthusiasm. Joy's post reminded me how good it feels to be passionate about what you do and how important it is to set goals for yourself (no matter what they may be) and have something you love doing drive you to fulfill them.

Amongst the fun I'll be having this weekend, I plan to do a little soul searching too. It's important to look inward sometimes and as yourself what am I passionate about right now? What makes me happiest? And what kind of life do I want to create for myself? Because I really do believe that we all get to create the life that we want to live. A little food for thought on this Friday afternoon... :)

Have a great one!

gallery wall inspiration.

We've had a gallery wall in almost every home we've shared but it was comprised of black and white photos with plain black frames - classic and simple. I got a little bored with that look so this time around  I want to go a little more bold with a mix of personal photos and graphic prints in an eclectic mix of frames of all sizes. The idea sounds great but I'm a little intimidated by the execution. I mean, where does one start? I'm thinking of finding one large print that really speaks to me and building around it. The fact that our living room is a blank canvas right now makes the possibilities endless...but I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing ;).

Do you have a photo or gallery wall in your home? How did you begin to build it? I'd love to hear!

family day at the zoo.

Since we moved into the house we've been so busy unpacking boxes and hosting a pretty constant flow of guests that we hadn't taken out much time for some family fun - just the three of us. So, on Sunday we decided to hit the road bright and early and headed to the LA Zoo. My idea of the perfect family day is doing an activity that's primarily geared towards Alique and allows us to be in the beautiful sunshine, so the zoo was the perfect plan. We hadn't taken Alique to the zoo since she was 11-months-old so this visit was extra special. She was so in awe of all of the animals and it was truly priceless to see the excitement on her face. My favorites to visit are the elephants and the giraffe's but Alique was beyond anxious to see the monkeys. Luckily for us they were extra rambunctious that day and put on a great show for us. Alique even got face-to-face with a chimpanzee that was just kicking back and snacking on a twig (you can see it in the photo above). They were separated by pexi-glass but it was still very surreal to be so close to it...so amazing! It was a great day and the fact that Alique is still talking about it three days later just tells me that our family day was just as special for her as it was for us.

night stand inspiration.

Pretty pops of color and rosebud salve for end-of-the-day pampering. Perfection.

A beautiful alarm clock might make early morning wake-up calls a little more bearable. Or maybe not ;)

Love the soothing palette and the art work casually leaning against the wall.

The funny thing about moving into a house rather than an apartment is that you put a lot more pressure on yourself to make it look perfect...I blame Pinterest. With more than twice the space we use to have, the furniture that use to overwhelm our tiny apartment seemed so dinky in our new home. I mean, now that we were pretending to be grown-ups in this very grown up house we needed the furniture to look the part. So, we went out a bought a new bedroom set. Yup, no more Ikea Malm bed for us. Besides, that bed gave out on us years ago. (Ikea, I love you but you disappoint me every. single. time.)

Our bedroom furniture arrived and it was beautiful. I bought new sheets and pillows but something was still missing...the night stands were bare. They needed personality; accessories that said someone lives here but oddly, decorating the night stands didn't come naturally to me. I started with buying two table lamps and then got stuck, so I turned to my trusty Pinterest for some inspiration. Sure enough a quick search gave me all of the clues I needed. Books, maybe a candle, my new lamps and a picture frame or tchotchke to round it all out.

I'm going to work on this project over the weekend and post a photo of it next week. Out of curiosity, what kinds of things do you keep on your night stand?

an unexpected lunch date.

On a very ordinary day last week, Alique magically fell asleep in the car. Ara and I looked at each other with amazement and didn't know what to do with this wonderful gift of time that we were so graciously handed. Should we run errands and do something productive? Should we rush home and let her sleep in her bed while we get some work done? Or, should we go out to lunch and enjoy a long leisurely, uninterrupted meal? Bingo...that's what we'll do.

So, we decided to go to Highland Cafe where the ambiance was cozy and the vibe was laid back.

I took in the vintage-inspired decor and their odd collection of lucha libre masks.

I even decided to splurge and ordered a Mexican Coke. This was a celebration, after all.

I ordered this amazing blackened chicken sandwich with the perfect amount of spice.

And Ara ordered the Bulgogi sandwich which was so amazing that we decided to share.

And just as we were finishing up our perfect lunch, this little lady popped up her groggy little head. Thanks for the break, my love. Your timing was impeccable!

around these parts...

Hello, again!

I apologize for that little blogging break without notice. We finally moved into our new home and life suddenly got very busy, very quickly. For the past month all we've been doing is unpacking boxes, exploring our new neighborhood and trying to make ourselves at home. Our first week here was a bit bazaar. Even though we had spent the last seven months picking out every last detail of this house, it was still a bit jarring to move into the space and feel completely foreign in it. I was mostly concerned about Alique's transition but after a couple of days she was the queen of the castle.

By now, we've gotten used to the quirks of the house. It was built in 1941 so it has super creaky floors, a few odd looking bugs here and there and a basement that I would not dare venture alone. Still, it's a beautiful, peaceful place and it's been so nice to create a home for our little family again and get back into a rhythm. With each box unpacked, it's starting to feel a lot like home.

So, thanks for being patient with me while I slipped away to nest. I'll be back to regular posts starting this week, including a few pictures of the house, if you're interested. It's good to be back!

have a beautiful weekend!

Dear friends,

It's the weekend and Ara is back from his business trip...double the happiness! We spent the morning lazing on the beach, talking about our week, building sand castles and giving lots of hugs and kisses to our little girl. Alique was beyond happy to have her dad back and she requested many, many twirls on the sand to make up for lost time ;). Watching these two play together really makes me count my blessings. I am a lucky girl.

It's going to be a beautiful weekend in LA...hope your weekend is just as lovely!
